The Admiration Assignment

Alonzo Edwards. Risk taker, marketer, warehouse of knowledge, and one of the most enthusiastic, yet, patient people I know.

We met the summer of 2020 during a Zoom interview for a remote position as Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO). Even though I was new to the corporate world of finance, he took a chance and hired me!

Alonzo’s smile was the first thing I noticed. Now that I have known him for six months, the positive energy behind his smile seems limitless.

“Being an MLO is like being on a roller coaster,” he told me after I experienced a clear to close and a suspended application from underwriting – all in one week.

“Do you like roller coasters?”

Cautiously I answered, “sometimes.”

He laughed.

I have been known to send email correspondence anywhere from 1-4am. In the beginning of my career, I sent the messages immediately, now I schedule all emails to be sent at 8am. The reason for the new plan is because Alonzo answered me immediately, no matter what time of night.

“When do you sleep?” I asked.

Alonzo just laughed.

When I am feeling defeated by a challenging scenario, or feeling awful because I made a newbie mistake, Alonzo’s jovial voice raises my energy. He will call at the perfect time and greet me enthusiastically, “Hey Wendy! How are you today?” Plus he remembers to end the conversation, “I appreciate you, I am here if you need anything.”
